My agent was having a party and I went and Issa told me the real Molly was there. There’s an episode where Issa and Molly talk about how they hate L. And I asked them if they had seen , this was the day after the premiere, and the room went into applause.
So I never met her throughout the audition process or even filming the pilot. But tapping into this character, and also having [director] Melina Matsoukas, who is Miss Fashion, has been fun. Melina was very particular with what she wanted to see on me. Do you think Molly’s style has influenced your own? You definitely don’t want people to see you on TV and think, “Wow, Molly is hitting it, but then in real life, not so much. I joined it with a friend, for mutual support, and I just couldn’t do it. I know people who have fallen in love and gotten married off of Match.com; it worked for somebody. Even if they’re not hitting it racially, as a woman, you’ve been in those scenarios, you’ve been in those types of relationship. I think we hoped that people of all races could watch and identify themselves, and not just think that it’s black people and that it isn’t for them because they don’t live in Inglewood.People are identifying beyond race because the content is there, which is phenomenal.I know your parents are Nigerian and I’ve read in some of your interviews before about how they wanted you to be a doctor or an engineer.Just about anyone who has felt the rush of falling in love would agree that the experience is like being strapped into an amusement park thrill ride — a swirling blend of conflicting emotions.Excitement and anticipation compete with a little trepidation at being in the grip of forces beyond one’s control.
